For Parents
EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW
Real answers to the questions parents ask most about kids martial arts at NEXTStep in Gettysburg, PA.
01
Getting Started
Everything you need to know before your first class
What ages can start martial arts?
We welcome students as young as 3. Our Tiny Tigers program (ages 3–6) uses play-based movement and age-appropriate martial arts fundamentals to build coordination, listening skills, and early confidence. While we teach Taekwondo specifically, many families searching for karate near Gettysburg find that our programs offer everything they’re looking for. Rated 5.0 stars by 125+ families.
What should my child wear to the first class?
For the first class, comfortable athletic clothing is perfect — gym shorts or sweatpants and a t-shirt. No shoes needed; we train barefoot on padded mats. If your child enrolls, we’ll set them up with a proper uniform (dobok). Just bring a water bottle and a positive attitude.
How much do classes cost?
Our monthly tuition covers unlimited classes during your child’s scheduled days. We offer family discounts (the third family member often trains at 50% off or free depending on current promotions). Tuition breaks down to about $25 per class — less than a babysitter — for specialized instruction that builds life skills. Contact us for current pricing details.
What does the free intro class include?
A free intro class where your child trains alongside real students — not a watered-down demo. You’ll meet Master Jay, see our teaching style, and know right away if NEXTStep is the right fit. No payment required, no strings attached.
Do I need to sign a contract?
Our program is designed as a 12-month curriculum because that is how long it takes to see real change in a child’s discipline and skill. However, we are not a “contract” school that sends people to collections. We require a 30-day cancellation notice. Master Jay has been teaching for over 20 years — he doesn’t believe in trapping families who aren’t happy.
How do I schedule a free intro class?
You can book a free intro class right from our website by visiting the Contact page, or call us at (717) 457-0023. You can also use our live chat to schedule a time that works for your family. We’ll confirm your spot and make sure your child’s first experience is set up for success.

Programs & Training
Details about our curriculum, belt system, and class structure
What programs do you offer?
We offer three core programs: Tiny Tigers (ages 3–6) for foundational movement and confidence, Junior Warriors (ages 7–12) for building discipline, focus, and martial arts skill, and Teen & Adult (ages 13+) for fitness, self-defense, and personal growth. We also offer Leadership training (weapons and public speaking), Legacy (competition and advanced skills), and Family classes so parents and kids can train together.
What’s the difference between Tiny Tigers and Junior Warriors?
Tiny Tigers (ages 3–6) focuses on play-based learning, basic motor skills, listening, and early confidence. The curriculum is shorter, more movement-oriented, and designed around how young children learn best. Junior Warriors (ages 7–12) builds on that foundation with more structured martial arts technique, self-discipline, goal setting, and belt progression. Both programs follow our S.E.K.L. philosophy.
How does the belt system work?
Students progress through colored belts by earning stripes (White, Yellow, Green, Blue, Red, Black) that track their readiness. A student is not invited to test until they’ve earned all their stripes, which means they’re prepared and confident before testing day. Think of stripe checks as open-book quizzes — low pressure, designed to build momentum. Belt testing fees cover the new belt, board break, certificate, and rank registration.
How often should my child attend?
Our program is designed for attendance twice a week to ensure students retain the curriculum and earn their stripes. Coming once a week usually leads to falling behind and feeling discouraged. We offer classes Monday through Thursday with flexible scheduling, so you can mix and match days to fit around other activities and sports seasons.
Is there sparring in kids’ classes?
For beginners, there is no contact sparring. We focus on control, balance, and hitting pads — not people. Sparring is introduced later in a student’s journey, and even then, it is strictly controlled with full safety gear. We teach safety first, always.
How long does it take to get a Black Belt?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer — and we’d urge you to be cautious of any school that gives one. It typically takes about 3 to 3.5 years of consistent training. But the Black Belt is not the end — it’s the beginning of serious training. The path is deeply personal. It’s not about getting to Black Belt; it’s about becoming a better version of yourself along the way.
03
Safety & Concerns
How we keep kids safe and support every type of learner
Will martial arts make my child aggressive?
We don’t train fighters — we train leaders. There’s zero full-contact sparring in our kids’ programs. Every technique is taught with control, respect, and purpose. Our focus is building confidence, not aggression.
Is martial arts good for shy or anxious kids?
We specialize in kids who are nervous, shy, or unsure. Master Jay came to this country unable to speak English and was terrified of everything — martial arts changed his life. Our instructors are trained to meet every child where they are. We don’t throw them into the deep end — we start with a private introductory lesson or a small group evaluation to build a relationship with the instructor first. Most shy kids are smiling by the end of their first class.
Can martial arts help with focus or ADHD?
Our structured, fast-paced classes are designed to channel energy productively. We use clear commands, eye contact, and positive reinforcement. Short drills, clear goals, and movement-based learning help kids with focus challenges thrive. Many parents report noticeable improvements within the first month.
What safety measures do you have?
Student safety is our top priority. We train on padded mats, use age-appropriate techniques, and require full safety gear for any contact activities. Class sizes are managed so every student gets individual attention. Our facility is clean, well-maintained, and designed specifically for martial arts instruction.
Are instructors background checked?
Yes. All instructors and staff at NEXTStep undergo background checks. Master Jay personally trains and certifies every instructor in our methodology. Our Certified Instructor Trainees (CITs) are advanced students who assist in classes under direct supervision — they’re proof of what your child could become.

About NEXTStep
Our story, philosophy, and what sets us apart
What makes NEXTStep different from other martial arts schools?
Over two decades of teaching excellence. A proprietary S.E.K.L. philosophy (Structure, Emotion, Knowledge, Legacy). Certified educators, not just black belts. A 5.0-star Google rating from 125+ families. And a head instructor who knows your child by name. We’re not a belt factory — we’re a character development center that uses martial arts as the vehicle.
Who is Master Jay?
Master Jay is a 5th Degree Black Belt with over 20 years of teaching experience. He immigrated to the United States as a young person, unable to speak English, and martial arts became his path to confidence, discipline, and purpose. That personal transformation story drives everything we do at NEXTStep. He knows every student by name and is personally invested in their growth.
What is the S.E.K.L. method?
S.E.K.L. stands for Structure, Emotion, Knowledge, and Legacy — the four pillars that guide every class, every interaction, and every decision at NEXTStep. Structure builds discipline and routine. Emotion develops confidence and empathy. Knowledge covers martial arts technique and life skills. Legacy is about giving back and becoming a leader. It’s not just a curriculum — it’s a philosophy for raising great kids.
