Life skills & confidence · Gettysburg
Confidence is
built, not born.
Every NEXTStep class teaches Taekwondo and something bigger: six life-skill themes practiced on the mat and carried home. Ages 4 and up, Monday through Friday.
Ages 4–6: Tiny Tigers · Ages 7–12: Junior Warriors · 13+: Teen & Adult
Six Themes, Woven Into Every Class
Honesty
Owning the result of a test, a drill, or a mistake — then trying again.
Discipline
Lining up, bowing, waiting your turn, and finishing the count even when it is hard.
Belief
The board break, the first class count led out loud: the moment “I can’t” turns into “Yes I can.”
Communication
Speaking up in front of the class, answering an instructor clearly, asking for help.
Respect
For instructors, partners, parents, and the dojang — shown in a bow and a handshake, every class.
Self-Esteem
Earned one stripe and one belt at a time. Nothing is handed out.
How It Shows Up in Class
- Students lead the class count and call out techniques in front of their peers.
- Every class opens and closes with a bow; every belt is received with a handshake.
- Stripes and belts mark real progress — a student knows exactly what they earned and why.
- Board breaks at belt tests turn practice into a visible “Yes I Can” moment.
- Older students help younger ones, and leadership is part of advancing.

What Families Say
5.0 stars from 125+ families on Google.
“The instructors are really great with all the kids, and go above and beyond to teach them not only taekwondo but life skills like confidence, leadership, and respect.”
“NEXTStep has phenomenal leadership. I got the opportunity to train with Jay. Within minutes you’re able to tell that you’re in the right place. He is an expert who exhibits kindness, patience, experience, and humor.”
“The staff, student helpers, other students and parents are so supportive. The focus, patience, and upbeat attitude of each staff and student helper instantly showed us that this is more than just a martial arts school, but a true community focused on respect, leadership, and student growth.”
“Yesterday I spoke at a national oncology conference in front of an audience of roughly 100 people. Something I honestly thought I couldn't do before starting taekwondo. I was slightly nervous, but took the time to practice and prepare. I want to thank everyone at NextStep who has played a part in building my self confidence! Yes I can!”
Life Skills FAQ
Is this a separate class I sign up for?
No. The six life-skill themes are part of every NEXTStep Taekwondo class, from Tiny Tigers (ages 4–6) through Junior Warriors (7–12) and Teen & Adult (13+). You enroll in the class for your student’s age, and the life-skill curriculum comes with it.
What are the six themes?
Honesty, Discipline, Belief, Communication, Respect, and Self-Esteem. They rotate through the year and are taught through what students actually do in class — bowing, leading the count, earning stripes, breaking boards, and helping each other.
