Martial Arts Is More Than Jumping and Kicking

When people picture taekwondo, they often picture the dramatic moments: someone jumping high, kicking hard, moving fast. Those moments are exciting, and it is easy to see why they get so much attention. But to me, martial arts should not always be about jumping high, jumping crazy, and kicking. There is more to it than that.

The physical side of training does matter, but it has a natural timeline. Usually, somewhere between the ages of 18 and 25, the body reaches its physical peak. If a martial art were only about the physical skill at that peak, it would only be meaningful for a short stretch of a person's life.

That is why I think martial arts has to be something closer to a life of its own. It should be a practice that fits into the long run and not only the years when the body is at its sharpest. Taekwondo is a lifelong practice, and the flashy physical skill is only one part of it.

What does that mean for you as a parent? Here are a few things to keep in mind.

First, look beyond the highlight reel. High kicks and big jumps are fun to watch, but they are not the whole picture of what your child is doing in class. Training is about more than how a movement looks at its most impressive.

Second, think in terms of years, not moments. Physical ability rises and eventually changes, but a practice you can carry with you does not have to end when the body peaks. When you think about why your child is training, consider what they might keep long after the physical peak has passed.

Third, keep a healthy perspective on progress. Your child does not need to be the highest jumper or the hardest kicker to be doing real martial arts. Taekwondo is a long road, and the goal is for it to become part of a person's life.

So the next time you watch a class, enjoy the energy and the athleticism. Just remember that what you are seeing is one part of something bigger, a practice meant to last a lifetime.
